Decorating period homes, barns and timber-framed buildings

Older buildings move, breathe and have character worth keeping. We take the time to prepare old surfaces properly and choose materials that suit them.

What’s included

  • Timber-framed elevations and infill panels
  • Exposed beams, trusses and ceilings
  • Weatherboarded barns and outbuildings
  • Traditional sash and casement windows
  • Old plaster and uneven walls
  • Staircases, doors and original joinery

Why period properties need a different approach

Many Cotswold and Gloucestershire cottages and barns were built with lime mortar, lime plaster and solid timber. Sealing them in with the wrong modern coatings can trap moisture. We look at what the walls are made of before recommending a paint, and we work carefully around beams, uneven plaster and old joinery rather than trying to make an old building look new.

Recent work on older buildings

We repainted the infill panels of a large timber-framed barn, refreshed a black weatherboard barn and its doors, decorated beamed cottage bedrooms and helped finish a stone barn conversion. The photos show the condition before and during the work as well as the finished result.

FAQ

Period & timber-framed properties: common questions

Do you work on listed buildings?

We work on period and older properties. If a building is listed, changes to its appearance may need consent, so we recommend checking with the local authority. We are happy to follow any specification you have been given.

Can you paint around exposed beams without damaging them?

Yes. We mask and cut in carefully around beams and trusses, and protect them from paint and dust throughout the job.

Do you cover the Cotswolds as well as Cheltenham?

Yes. We regularly work in villages around Cheltenham and further into Gloucestershire. Get in touch with your postcode and we will confirm.
